The September issue of Cancer Nursing Practice http://www.nursing-standard.co.uk/cancernursing/ has genetics on the front cover. Yipee!
Here at Glamorgan we are all extremely pleased; this month, Cancer Nursing Practice and 6 other journals from the RCN publishing group:
Emergency Nurse
Learning Disability Practice
Mental Health Practice
Nursing Older People
Paediatric Nursing
Primary Health Care
all have articles by Maggie Kirk, myself and a specialist nurse from each field, that have been written to raise awareness about how genetics fits into nursing practice.
We also want to find out what nurses really think about the subject and so have included a short questionnaire alongside each piece. If you’re a nurse working in the UK and have access to a computer, you can also find the questionnaire at www.geneticseducation.nhs.uk/questionnaire
Thanks to Karen Birmingham and all the other editorial staff at RCN for their hard working in getting all seven pieces published simultaneously.
I did not see the cancer article but I did read one or two of the other articles and I thought they were interesting. I felt that the scenarios were good in highlighting examples in practice where genetic knowledge could be used because I think it is so easy to miss the links when you are busy. Unfortunately I think that comments similar to the one made be Sarah Davies manager (scenario 1 page 22 Nursing Older People Sept 2006)are all too common! Series of articles such as these may help reduce this and provide the nurses with the evidence to take to their managers to support such a request.
