DNA databases – the debate continues

Here at the GPU we’ve posted a number of blogs around DNA database and there has been a large amount of media coverage of late. I recently attended the British Society of Human Genetics Annual Conference in York and the topic was covered there in the session that they usually refer to as The Great Debate. This year it was more of an information and Q&A session comparing issues of collection, storage and anonymity between DNA databases for forensic purposes and those for health related research (for example the UK BioBank project http://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk/ and other longitudinal studies).

For those living locally who are interested in finding out more about the Police DNA database, the Wales Gene Park have organised a public discussion on 15 November 6pm – 7.30pm at the Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre (The Tube).
This event is FREE, but you need to register. Call Claudine on 02920 475 475 or email andersoncn@cardiff.ac.uk to reserve a place.
